RECs vary by resource type (wind, solar, biomass, etc), area of origin, and year of origination. High-quality RECs are those that meet a state’s renewable portfolio regulations for mandatory compliance, or the Green-e standard of attestation for quality for voluntary purchases. The Green-e attestation ensures certificates are not double counted and that the renewable generation facility meets certain standards, such as the online date and size.
