Renewable Portfolio Standards (RPS)

A renewable portfolio standard is a market-driven state policy that requires electricity providers to obtain a minimum percentage of their power from renewable energy resources by a certain date. Most states allow electricity providers to satisfy their compliance through the purchase of RECs independent of electricity.
