Element Markets is pleased to announce the addition of Stephen J. Schaefer to its Board of Directors. With over 30 years of experience, Mr. Schaefer is a recognized and respected leader in the energy industry. “Stephen is joining our Board at a formative time in our company’s history. After three consecutive years of revenue and income growth, we are seeking to continue our pace of growth through the innovative expansion of our business units, including M&A activities.” said Randall Lack, Founder and Chief Marketing Officer of Element Markets
Mr. Schaefer has deep, direct executive management experience in mergers, acquisitions and divestitures, restructuring, debt and equity financing, and credit agency interaction. Most recently, Mr. Schaefer was a Partner with Riverstone Holdings, an approximately $36 billion private equity fund, where he led investment teams responsible for the conventional and renewable energy investments. While at Riverstone Holdings he managed the effort to form Pattern Energy Group, an independent renewable power company, which was taken public in 2013. In addition to his work with renewable energy firms, Mr. Schaefer also led the Riverstone teams that have acquired, financed, re-financed and monetized companies in the fossil fuel sector. Stephen has served on multiple Boards including Raven Power, Topaz Power, and Sapphire Power, throughout all stages of growth from the initial investment date through the final monetization of the investment.
“Stephen brings a strong skillset to our Board with an extensive background in energy through his work as a Partner at Riverstone Energy, as well as his business development and financing experience from his days at Duke Energy and LG&E. I have known Stephen for a long time, and we are honored he accepted a nomination to our Board,” said Lack.
Stephen also serves on the Homer City Holdings Board of Directors, where he is also the chairman of the Risk Management Committee. Homer City owns approximately 1800 MW of coal-fired power generating equipment in Western Pennsylvania. It operates in the highly competitive, non-regulated power space. Homer City emerged from Bankruptcy in April of 2017 and is now owned primarily by its pre-petition lenders.
Prior to joining the private equity industry, Mr. Schaefer worked directly for energy companies in the rapidly changing, deregulated energy industry. Mr. Schaefer worked as an Interim CEO for Boston Generating Company, Managing Director responsible for North American M&A for Duke Energy and Vice President and for LG&E Energy , where he led domestic and international mergers and acquisitions.
