EM Gas Marketing, LLC, a wholly-owned subsidiary of Element Markets, LLC, was selected through a competitive RFP process to manage biogas produced from the Fresh Kills landfill and associated Renewable Fuel Standard Renewable Identification Numbers (RINs) and California Low Carbon Fuel Standard (LCFS) credits for the New York City Department of Sanitation.

The contract between EM Gas Marketing and DSNY was entered into on April 17, 2015, and the Fresh Kills landfill was registered as a biogas facility under the Renewable Fuel Standard, which is administered by the United States Environmental Protection Agency, on June 19, 2015. Under the multi-year agreement, Element Markets is responsible for the generation, marketing and sale of all RIN and LCFS credits from the landfill’s biogas. The biogas project sits on the site of the world’s largest landfill, which has been closed since 2001. The facility continues to produce biogas as the waste in place continues to degrade, and the gas produced by the landfill is injected into the common carrier pipeline.

“This is truly a one-of-a-kind project in scale and execution, and it is exciting to be a part of it,” Randall Lack, Founder & Chief Marketing Officer said. “We have had tremendous success on behalf of DSNY and we are pleased to report that we will have sold over $18,500,000 in renewable fuel credits from this project by the end of 2016 with more to come.”

Opened in 1948, Fresh Kills grew to become the world’s largest landfill site. New York began processing Fresh Kills landfill biogas for sale to the grid in the 1980s. After New York ceased accepting waste at Fresh Kills in 2001, it began transitioning portions of the landfill from an active site to a newly designed 2,200 park which is expected to be constructed and opened in stages over the next few decades.

According to New York City Department of Sanitation Commissioner Kathryn Garcia, “The New York City Department of Sanitation is pleased to be getting added value from the processing and sale of Fresh Kills biogas by contracting with EM Gas Marketing. We are also proud that this contract makes New York City part of efforts by some states and USEPA to foster profitable renewable fuel markets in the US.”
